 WCPSEF 2011 Spring GRAB BAG

Boonsboro Elementary Schools

Project:  First Lego League FLL Engineers

Request:  $834.69

 

FIRST provides students from K-12 with a foundation for Engineering.  From team building to designing and programming a robot, teams problem-solve with science and technology.  The project part of the challenge involves researching a real-world problem, investigating the problem and finding innovative solutions to address the problem. The team shares their project in a creative ways (such as plays, Power Point presentations and brochures) in order to inform others in the community. The foundation of the team is built on gracious professionalism as they compete at a state qualifying round with hopes of making it to the state competition.    

 

Pangborn Elementary School

Project:  Relax…Read…SUCCEED!

Request:  $689.97

 

Five students from each grade level who will not have access to reading materials over the summer will be selected to participate in the program.  Each student will be given five books at their independent reading level to take home and keep for independent reading over the summer.  Each book will be labeled inside with an enduring understanding that promotes lifelong learning.  Upon return to school in August a literacy gathering will be held to provide an opportunity to share students’ summer reading experiences/favorite books.

 

Springfield Middle School

Project:  Recreation/Leisure Awareness

Request:  $368.46

The Recreation/Leisure Awareness Program will give disabled students the opportunity to participate in age appropriate activities.  Wii Fitness and Sports Games will be used to encourage students to engage in a variety of individual tasks and group tournaments.  The activities will help students to increase their gross and fine motor skills and to physically interact with a variety of fitness and sports programs. 

 

Lincolnshire Elementary School

Project:  Engaging Below Grade Level Readers during Independent Reading

Request:  $996.00

Many Intermediate students who are reading below grade level are often embarrassed when they are given independent reading books to read. They often feel these are “baby” books and are reluctant to read them. They do not want the other students to see their below grade level text.  By providing students with the Barnes & Noble Nook Color, these students can read a wide selection of books on their reading level with discretion.  The Nook Color has read by myself and read to me features.  These features allow students to practice various reading strategies, as well as fluency.

 

Pangborn Elementary School

Project:  Regions of United States—CES Exhibition Project

Request: $948.97

 

The goal of this project is to research and study the regions of the United States and their respective states. This project will promote collaboration among students within various classes, a necessary 21st Century skill of learning.  Students in each class, five in all, will research their state in their respective region, collaborate with other students in their region to write, rehearse, edit, and video a “Welcome to the ____ Region of the United States”.  This video would then be used to welcome parents, stakeholders, and other attendees during an Exhibition night scheduled in May.

North Hagerstown High School

Project: “Alternative Methods for Student Demonstration of Knowledge”

Request:  $924.74

 

To enable the life-skills students to demonstrate content mastery and skill knowledge by means other than written assessments. 

To empower individual life-skills students to express their abilities both within and outside of the traditional classroom setting, via the use of skill demonstration and subsequent recording with film/video utilizing flip camera technology.  

To expose life-skills students to steps necessary to navigate the County-Commuter System, and to enhance student opportunities to learn about various work related skills within the greater Hagerstown community.

 

E. Russell Hicks Middle School

Project:  Inspirational Art

Request:  $750.00

 

To provide students the opportunity to create inspirational art for E. Russell Hicks Middle School’s library and main computer lab areas.  To create a physical space for reading and learning that is comfortable, desirable, and more attractive with art created by students in Washington County Public Schools for E. Russell Hicks students, staff members, parents, and community members who use the space.  Currently, both areas display no wall art.  The idea of the project is to hang art created by students in Washington County from the Tech high school.  For example, using material to create a large sparkling star representing students and the words above it saying, “You control how bright you shine.”
